I really like the Eee PC netbook line.
I was delighted when I learned they had a tablet version. I purchased one: the Eee PC 91MT, which … didn’t have multi-touch, and worse, it didn’t detect pressure variations, which is rather a big deal when one tries to draw with a tablet.
Since I bought the 91MT refurbished, I wasn’t able to return it for this egregious lack of function, not even to exchange for a higher model, an Amazon policy apparently intended to protect customers. That kind of protection I don’t really need, but I suppose there are situations where it could be necessary.
I decided to donate the 91MT, and went back to Amazon to look for the Eee PC 101MT. There are glowing reviews of this wonderful tablet PC.
Well, yeah. Most of those are about the European version, which has about double the hard drive space and comes with MS Win7 PRO pre-installed.
This one? No. It comes with Windows Starter Edition, which should be titled Windows Bait-And-Switch Edition. This model also couldn’t connect with my WiFi router until I dumbed down the router protocol to a much less secure protocol. Way to go. It has a much lower bandwidth wifi card than the others. It also comes with a full, steaming load of bloatware, including a truly horrid Trend Micro “antivirus” that I want nothing whatsoever to do with, and a bunch of other clutter. Microsoft has their own antivirus now, and it works beautifully, and I want nothing to do with the previous thing.
You can get a free trial (first one’s free, kiddies) of a rather expensive online data storage setup. To get an operating system that will be of any use whatsoever you will also need to update to Windows 7 Home or Windows 7 Pro.
I do not recommend going through Microsoft for this. You can spend 79$ to get the Home Version, and if you don’t want a well-integrated Windows Media Player that will be good enough, but if you do, you’d have to spend another $130 or so to upgrade to the next one past that, Windows 7 Pro. Instead go to one of the various online vendors (the successor to Egghead, for instance) and buy an OEM copy. The ONLY thing you’ll lose (besides the price hike) is phone support from Microsoft, which you’re not likely to be able to use anyway.
OH yeah. One more thing. No bluetooth. They don’t include bluetooth … why? Who knows. I vote for “cheap” because they’re trying to save money or something. And this has a large, capacious, but power-eating and vulnerable-to-jolts hard drive instead of the SSD the 91MT has. And no Linux option. People might say “But that’s because Linux doesn’t provide support for multitouch!” — well, yeah, it does now, and this thing as you get it out of the box doesn’t.
If this system had come with the features the European version has (for the same price, mind you) I would have been delighted.
As it is, I’m going to end up spending almost as much as I would have for an iPad to get a product which isn’t as light, has half the battery life, and which frankly, isn’t anywhere near as good.
Oh… one more thing. DO NOT BUY THE RECOMMENDED SEPARATE MEMORY that Amazon is hyping. People are having serious trouble getting 2GB memory upgrades to work. A 1GB SODIMM is the largest that is expected to work.
Way to go, Asus, and way to go Microsoft, making your competitor’s product look good.

OK, solid unit. Nice design. Good keyboard. Seems like a winner. But be ready for Windows 7 Starter. Not a bad OS, but doesn’t “MT” — right there in the product name — stand for “Multi-Touch”?
You would be better off buying a less expensive netbook w/o touch screen rather than plunking your cash down on a severely hobbled MT experience. Asus provides a shell program that allows very limited gestures — and definitely not enough to make me not wish I had bought an iPaid.
Amazon recommends 2Gig Ram, but don’t do it. The computer won’t recognize/boot on 2; it makes no differece if you use Windows 7 Starter or Premium. So, if you want to upgrade, just get 1GB.
Update: I installed the Premium 7 upgrade and I’m glad I did. I love the tablet functions — now it’s the real deal.
My guess is that Asus wanted to enter the market at the same price-point as Apple’s horse. If you don’t upgrade to Premium — “The screen, she will be getting as much physical attention as a hot girl with a contagious skin disease”.
Oh, and doesn’t come with bluetooth. I think this got stripped off to keep the price down as well. I’m guessing Asus will release a ‘better’ version for around $435 — and includes Premium/Bluetooth. Much better than paying $75.54 for off-the-shelf upgrade.

Asus netbooks seem to get glowing reviews, this netvertible, however, has serious problems. Both the touch screen and touch pad don’t operate properly, the cursor seems to have a mind of it’s own. After numbers of communications with Asus tech support and re-installing all the suggested drivers, I finally gave up and sent the computer back for a refund. After this experience I’m not sure I want to try another Asus netbook, with or without the touch screen.

1. Touchscreen and tablet – It works perfect, you have to tell the computer you’re using your fingers or a pen. My daughter is 2 years old and she likes to watch some videos from youtube, I turn the screen so the keyboard is behind the screen. When she wants some other video, she knows that she has to touch what she wants. I can wash dishes in peace.
2. Rotating screen – This feature is incredible, when you use this computer as a tablet you can rotate the graphics in the screen with a small button. I’m using this feature to read pdf books when i’m sitting on a train. It’s 2 times heavier than a Kindle or an Ipad but it is a complete windows system. Dont waste your money buying expensive reading devices that are still maturing.
3. Preloaded Expressgate – Do you use your netbook for working with excel files? Of course not. I use it for surfing in the web, listening music, reading pdf books. Imagine this situation: You’re just to leave home and you need to check something an address in the internet, check again an email or say something to your friend that is in the msn. You have to turn on your computer and wait until the system has booted. Not with this computer. In 2 seconds you can boot a linux based application that contains only a web browser, photo albums, messenger and skype. This is my favorite feature, 70% of the time, I use Expressgate. 30% I start windows.
Disadvantages: The ones any person with big hands would find when typing in a 10” netbook. However the keys have gaps between each other and makes it a little bit easier.
pd I also have to say that in my country this netbook is sold with 320 GB plus 500 GB webstorage and 2GB RAM. Everything goes well. Internet Explorer goes a little bit slow, but it is not ASUS, it is microsoft, ok? It goes as slow as my laptop from the office. I dont install firefox because it is so new that I want to keep it very clean.

I have been waiting for this tablet to appear for months. It is a nice size, nice build, and seems to run well (for a netbook). I upgraded memory and windows 7 before I even turned on the computer.
However, the Amazon website says it had bluetooth which I need for internet access. It does NOT. Amazon sent me a replacement and it didn’t have bluetooth either.
Amazon was very good about sending a new replacement and taking everything back, but I am very disappointed about not getting the right computer in the first place.
